Journey to the Mountain of Forever

(You just never know when you’re going to run across a 15 ft tall Princess Mononoke.) Journey to the Mountain of Forever by Binker and Moses.

A pretty cosmic name.
Fortunately, however, this album owes almost nothing to the 70s Jazz Fusion band Return to Forever.

A double album is a pretty ballsy move for a Sax and drum duo!

They do include some guests, among them Saxophonist Evan Parker and percussionist Sarathy Korwar, for variety.

The weakest song is probably the Caribbean tinged Fete by the River, which ends up sounding like 70s tv soundtrack music or something the Saturday Night Live band might kick out between sketches.

But, other than that slight mis-step, the album feels largely filler-free, impressive for it’s length.

Nice to hear their playing with a few more performers to bounce off of.

Seven Pieces – Live at Willisau

Seven Pieces – Live at Willisau 1995 by Evan Parker, Daunik Lazro, and Joe McPhee.

Three Saxophonists, one American, one British, and one French, improvising freely. Some wonderful and surprisingly lyrical interplay.

One of those records, where it reaches the end, and you want to go back and start over, to listen for more of the details and technique.

2017-06-22 Chicago Tenor Duets

Chicago Tenor Duets by Evan Parker / Joe McPhee.

The stars in my saxophone constellation from my teens into my twenties were: Johnny Hodges/LesterYoung -> John Coltrane/Eric Dolphy -> Evan Parker.

I’d always see Joe Mcphee’s albums on HatArt at the record store, but for some reason he didn’t really enter my area of interest. I guess he didn’t get as much press in the magazines I was reading at the time.

I was missing out, and am trying to make up for my oversight by listening to more of his recorded output these days.

Tie the Stone to the Wheel by Evan Parker / Seymour Wright.

Saxophone duos between UK free improv titan Evan Parker and his disciple Seymour Wright. So I basically spent the drive mentally cataloguing which sounds I knew how to make on the saxophone and which sounds I did not. One of them is really good at extended flutter tonguing, which I can’t do very well.

What If/They Both/Could Fly by Evan Parker and Joe McPhee.

Evan Parker on Tenor Sax in duet with Joe McPhee on Pocket Trumpet and Soprano Sax. A diverse and enjoyable set of free improvisation duos from two masters of the form.
