BOTW–Anchor Steam

11 May, 2008 (21:31) | Beer | 4 comments

To be honest, I was kind of a long time coming around to Anchor Brewing’s beers.
I’d drunk Anchor Steam on and off over the years, of course. However, it always seemed a bit expensive for being what amounts to a perfectly fine beer.
I’d always skip over it for beers with stronger character.
Ales and IPAs. [...]

BOTW–Nøgne Ø Pale Ale

4 May, 2008 (14:58) | BOTW, Beer | No comments

The Nøgne Ø Pale Ale is another beer club beer.
The nice thing about the beer club we belong to is that they include a little sheet with information about the beer and tasting notes.
As a Norwegian, I found the story of this beer really interesting.
The founder of the brewery, Kjetil Jikiun was a long haul [...]

Proposed California Beer Tax

27 April, 2008 (11:20) | Beer | No comments

New Drys on the move again?
Higher state tax on beer?, By Mike Zapler, Mercury News Sacramento Bureau, 04/11/2008 01:34:17 AM PDT
SACRAMENTO - Joe Six-pack will have to pay a lot more to get his buzz on if Assemblyman Jim Beall has his way.
The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 [...]

BOTW–Mirror Pond

27 April, 2008 (09:33) | Beer | 2 comments

What can I say, sometimes on a hot day it’s nice to sit on the back porch and have a good, relatively simple beer. Especially, if you’re maybe a bit hung over from the night before.
Mirror Pond is fairly generously hopped for a Pale Ale, with lots of malty goodness. I suppose perhaps [...]

BOTW–La Roja

Who could resist a beer with a label like this? Pirate cat on the label? I’m in!
Ran across this beer at the Harrison Street Whole Foods. They are also carrying Jolly Pumpkin’s Oro de Calabaza Ale. This is the first time I remember seeing Jolly Pumpkin Beer in California. Quite [...]

Dogfish Head in the vicinity

18 April, 2008 (12:17) | Beer | No comments

After a very long wait, Dogfish Head beers are finally just about available in the San Francisco Bay Area.
According to this post on William Brand’s blog, What’s on Tap, DBI Beverage Inc. are “…just beginning distribution…Whole Foods, Bev Mo and other independent retailers will start receiving product deliveries next week.”
If you can’t wait, you’ll be [...]

BOTW–Keoki Sunset

16 April, 2008 (00:16) | Beer | No comments

I can’t say that this was the best beer I’ve ever had, but the view from the deck certainly made it a lot more enjoyable.
Anyway, yes, vacationing for the last week.
We now resume our regularly scheduled posting…

BOTW–Serafijn Celtic Angel

5 April, 2008 (14:46) | Beer | No comments

Interestingly, according the the document which came with this beer club release, this beer was originally brewed under contract for “an Irish musical group.” Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to figure out which musical group.
It is brewed in Belgium by a tiny microbrewery called Achilles. The documents call it a Irish Red Ale [...]

BOTW–AVBC 20th Anniversary Imperial IPA

29 March, 2008 (13:12) | Beer | No comments

Normally, I quite enjoy the beers of the Anderson Valley Brewing Company. Really enjoy their Boont Amber, Deep Ender’s Porter, and Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout. All are fine examples of California Beer Brewing.
But, boy I did not like this 20th Anniversary Imperial IPA.
It’s an OK Imperial India Pale Ale. Not particularly out there [...]

BOTW–Firestone Walker Pale Ale

23 March, 2008 (14:43) | Beer, Crazylandia | No comments

I got home at about 1:00 on Saturday morning.
It might have been late, but I’d been serving drinks to people all night. I was hot, sweaty, and thirsty.
Quite some time ago, I had tried Firestone Walker’s Double Barrel Ale and not really cared for it. To me it tasted kind of like unmalted [...]
