I switched to Cinzano from M&R and have been very happy with the results... I feel like M&R rosso oxidizes pretty much instantly on contact with the air, and gets overwhelmed very easily. Definitely the Cinzano was a huge improvement for Negronis and Boulevardiers (my favorite!). BUt I'll pick up a 375 of M&R and do a comparison...

There are a few good options for buying cherries.

On the non-alcoholic side there are Toschi Amarena Cherries in Syrup, Amarena Fabbri Wild Cherries in Syrup, and Luxardo Marasca Cherries in Syrup. You can often find these at Italian specialty stores in America.

On the alcoholic side, the French make some wonderful cherries in Cognac and in Armagnac.

I'm also a former Cinzano drinker who's now a M&R convert. Better balance and a deeper bitter note.

And the Toschi Amarena rock--I haven't bothered going the make-your-own approach with cherries, based primarily on how much I freakin' love these. Tasty, and eye-catching (and if you give 'em a good rinse before using, they don't take the flavor of the drink for a ride).
