Blue Train Cocktail

29 April, 2008 (06:36) | Savoy Cocktail Book

Blue Train Cocktail

1/4 Lemon Juice. (1/2 oz Lemon Juice)
1/4 Cointreau. (1/2 oz Cointreau)
1/2 Dry Gin. (1 oz Plymouth Gin)
1 Dash of Blue Vegetable Extract. (1 drop Blue Coloring)

Shake well and strain into cocktail glass. (Lemon Twist.)

Aside from being blue, this cocktail has several close relatives. Among them are the Sidecar, the Margarita, and the Aviation.

For whatever reason, this one doesn’t quite rise to the heights of those cocktails. It is a perfectly fine and refreshing Gin cocktail. Just not, for whatever reason, a real classic for me.

This post is one in a series documenting my ongoing effort to make all of the cocktails in the Savoy Cocktail Book, starting at the first, Abbey, and ending at the last, Zed.

You’d mentioned switching-out the blue food coloring; do you have a suggestion of a good (nearly tasteless) one?

I wonder how this would go with the iris and pepper notes in Magellan gin.

Interesting idea, Ouroboros, as you could then leave out the Blue Food Coloring.

I haven’t gotten around to trying Magellan Gin, any good?

I have to admit I’m still using the same Blue Food Coloring. I did see some “natural” coloring at a local health food store, but I haven’t worked up sufficient steam to purchase it. I just don’t color that many things blue!
