Commenting on absinthe and price: The Jade brand is more expensive than the rest of the absinthe available. But when you calculate it out at price per drink, it is less than a dollar more per drink even when you consider the shipping! And when you consider the less expensive alternatives come no where near a Jade as far as taste, one dollar is a small price to pay.

While it gets scant attention, wormwood was and still is the base for a number of Amaros/bitter liqueurs in central and eastern Europe. They can be quite exquisite, especially if you enjoy amaros, though no easier to find in the US than Absinthe!

Erik,

I definitely agreed on Henri Bardouin Pastis. It is easily my favorite of the absinthe substitutes.

I haven't tried the La Muse Verte, is it any good?

I believe it is one of the few Absinthe-like spirits available in the US that isn't sweetened.

Vomitrociously! Hahaha!

Great post; I've been getting all geared up to track down some Lucid once it makes an appearance in LA.

Oh, and just as a sidenote—La Muse Verte comes with a drip spoon, so for anyone who wants to experiment before investing in a real bottle, that might be a good place to get some experience and equipment all in one.
